NEW School Year NEW Beginnings!

Amazing how time flies and we are already starting the 2010-2011 school year! I am excited and ready to start the MANY new projects and materials I learned about over the summer. One class I took was about the 6 Traits of Writing which should be fun using this year. We will be looking at not just writing something but the process of writing and the great shapes writing can take. I have added a new site call Wordle to my list of links. Pick a topic and have fun. Here is an example of one I created!

Youth Marketplace goes to the Bank

Today was a great day for North Winn. Middle Schoolers involved in Youth Marketplace. This is a great program offered to Middle School students who would like to learn to be entrepreneurs. Students work in small groups to start create and run a business. The first 4 weeks of the program students have been learning about business plans and all the detail the go into designing a business. Once they have a plan put together they present their plans to a banker and hope for approval of their loans. After they have their loans the fun of production and advertising begins. The businesses will be open for only two days during the Decorah High School Craft and Bake Sale October 31st and November 1st.

Today students made their trip to Viking State Bank and Trust. After they presented their plans and answered many questions about how their businesses they received their loans. The two businesses that were approved of today were Green Sleeves TO GO/Cool Cup Coasters and Cocoa's. Green Sleeves TO GO/Cool Cup Coasters will be selling reusable sleeves to put over those coffee cups that get too hot to hold and coasters to protect the tables from stains. Cocoa's are creating reusable gift bags that will make a wonderful addition to any gift.

SWIM ON IN!

I am hoping that everyone had a great summer and are energized for the new school year! I am looking forward to a great year with tons of fun learning! I would like to give a heads up that I am planning on having a long-term sub in my room late fall. I am expecting around Thanksgiving and plan to be on leave until the end of January. See you soon!

Introducing Daily 5 Read to Self

Mrs. Wicklund and I have been working closely as a team to launch many great strategies for the Daily 5 program. We started out by introducing the first of five components of the Daily 5 which is Read to Self. In this part children learn to create a solid foundation. Although many students know how to read to themselves, many have created bad habits and need to get back to building the foundation. To start we look at the 3 Ways oto Read a Book which are:
Read and talk about the pictures
Read the words
Retell a previously read book

We created an "I" chart which gave students some guideline to follow during Read to Self

Students
Read the whole time
Stay in one spot
Read quietly
Work on stamina
Get started right away

Teacher
Work with groups of students
Listen to children read
Help students with reading

Good-Fit Books

Mrs. Wicklund and I are taking a class this winter to learn new and exciting strategies for reading. During the class we learned and useful tip on how to teach students to pick a book that is just right for them. We use the acronym " I PICK" to find a book that is just right for the reader.

I choose a book.
P urpose--Why do I want to read?
I nterest--Does it interest me?
C omprehend--Am I understanding what I am reading?
K now--I know most of the words, using the 5 finger rule.

We demonstrated to students how to choose a shoe based on our purpose of clothing. Mrs. Wicklund brought in Addison's shoes and I brought in a doll. The students learned how we use this same process when doing other things in life and that choosing a book is just as important as the picking of shoes we put on our feet!

On Friday the North Winn Resource Room we had a little going away party for Ms. S. The students are very hopeful that throughout the rest of the year Ms. S will have a chance to stop in.
